The Malta Youth Orchestra is the 'sister ensemble' of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and is made up of talented young musicians.
The target aim of the MYO is to provide an excellent opportunity for budding musicians to gain first-hand experience playing in an orchestra and, more importantly, to participate in the joy of ensemble music-making.
The MYO made its first public appearance in December 2004 during a concert held at the President's Palace in Valletta under the direction of Michael Laus.
In 2011 the MYO was revived and on April 27 gave a concert at Sir Temi Zammit Hall (University of Malta) under the direction of its current artistic director and conductor Joseph Vella, meeting regularly on Saturday mornings at Robert Samut Hall. Despite being essentially a student orchestra, the MYO tackles core classical repertoire spanning several centuries and genres. The MYO has been busily engaged in various concerts this year including participation during Notte Bianca and a concert held at Verdala Palace transmitted during the Istrina events, a Christmas concert held at the Ministry of Finance, a themed concert Battle Music specifically designed for the Ziguzajg Kids and Youth Arts Festival, and a joint concert together with the MPO under the director of British Conductor Philip Walsh.
