The Geelong Youth Choir was founded in 1988 to provide young people with a sound musical education in vocal training, musicianship and sight-singing. Young people aged 5 – 20 years enjoy a wide range of quality music, build confidence in performance and develop their musicianship and vocal skills through Kodály-based programs.
Over recent years choristers of all ages were involved in the Australian premiere of a musical drama by Geelong composer, Dr Malcolm John; choirs competed at the Geelong Eisteddfod, sang at the Pako Festa, and performed in a variety of concerts.
Older choristers joined regional choirs for the well-known Carnival of Choirs; sang with the Geelong Chorale at inspiring concerts featuring the music of Bach, Britten, and much more.
GYC's musical repertoire is broad, ranging from contemporary Australian music, through African harmonies to medieval songs and carols, both accompanied and a cappella.
Music and movement are encouraged, and young children soak up musical concepts and training through games and play. Older choristers enjoy challenging music and a high standard of musical excellence.
